Volunteers' Week 2008

We held a number of events to celebrate Volunteers' Week 2008, they were:-

On Monday 2nd June at the offices of eVOLution held a Speed Match Volunteering event.

Aimed at those who had been thinking about volunteering, but weren’t quite sure what to do, or which charity to support, then Volunteer Speed Matching was designed to be a fun way to get started.

Potential volunteers booked a slot on one of our speed matching sessions and gave 10 local organisations 3 minutes each to impress them.

On offer was information about helping other local people, and about helping local projects. Organisations taking part included those that help people who are young and not so young, people with physical and learning disabilities, people who are homeless, victims of crime, or experiencing mental distress, and people in hospitals, hospices and day centres.

On Tuesday 3rd June there was a team challenge involving Employer Supported Volunteers – 3 teams, one each from Darlington Borough Council, Darlington Primary Care Trust and the Business Sector from Local Strategic Partnership took part –the challenge - to do a garden makeover of 3 Darlington citizens who were no longer able to tend their own gardens. Real team spirit and determination was demonstrated in awful weather conditions. To see the results please click here.

On Wednesday 4th June our Annual Volunteering Awards took place at the Dolphin Centre – it was the real chance to celebrate volunteering and all those involved.

On Thursday 5th June the Fun Fashion Dash took place. Teams of two picked a themed outfit out of a hat and then had 1hour to locate their items from participating Charity Shops. The outfits were then paraded in St Cuthberts Church Hall, amongst friends and your supporters. Prizes were given to the best and most original competitors.

On Friday 6th June saw the Battle of the Bands Final - The rE-view team held the final of the battle of the bands competition in the Market Square. Young bands from across Darlington had been competing against each other in heats, with the finalists made up of the heat winners as well as a wild card entry. As well as the battle of the bands, young people had the chance to find out more about volunteering opportunities and the services offered across Darlington, as agencies and organisations set up stalls to advertise and promote the excellent work they do.
